The O'Connor Cup

The O’ Connor Cup was presented to Ballintubber G.A.A Club by the family of Lawrence O’ Connor who died in 1980 R.I.P. Lawrence was born and reared in Cranmore but spent much of his early working life in Stockport and Manchester. It was there that he met and married his wife Lil,a native of Sligo. He returned to Ireland in 1940 and farmed a holding of land in Derrew, Partry. He was an officer in the Ballintubber Club in the 1950’S and he was a lifelong supporter of all Ballintubber teams.

His house would always be packed with neighbours and friends on All - Ireland Final Sunday in the early and mid - sixties as his was one of the few houses at the time with a television.

He was pre-deceased by his wife Lil, by his son Lawrence and by his daughters Sheila and Maureen.

The Cup is presented annually to the winners of the club’s under 16 tournament. The winners in the past include Tourmakeady, Oranmore and Ballintubber, who are the present holders of the trophy.
